Do kettles use a lot of Energy?

Kettles are one of the most used appliances in the kitchen with the average family brewing up around 4 times a day and a total of 1500 times per year. That amounts to a considerable amount of Energy.

How they work

Energy Saving Recommended kettles or instantaneous water heaters have to meet strict testing, ensuring that they demonstrate a 20% reduction in energy consumption over that consumed by an average kettle.

The savings

An Energy Saving Recommended kettle will use approximately 20% less electricity than an ordinary kettle.

As well as this, if everyone boiled only the water they needed each time they used the kettle, we could save enough electricity in a year to power the UK’s street lights for nearly 7 months. This is the equivalent of the electricity used by 330,000 households for a year or the output of a typical power station for 4 months. (Source EST)

How the savings add up

According to the Energy Saving Trust, if every household in the UK used an Energy Saving Recommended kettle, we would save around £170 million of electricity a year.
