If your house is more than ten years old the chances are that it won’t have any insulation, resulting in 35% of the heat within the house being lost through the walls.
You can solve this problem with cavity wall insulation, which fills the gap between the two external walls most houses have. The insulation is blown into the gap from the outside and is made up of mineral wool, beads or foamed insulants. This will reduce the heat loss in a typical house by about 25% which translates into a 40% reduction in heating consumption.
It is the Government’s ambition that all remaining practical cavity walls be insulated within this decade, through the Green Deal. With highly insulated houses, you may no longer need large amounts of space heating, reducing energy bills further.
