Domestic Hydropower
Hydroelectric systems create electricity generated by hydropower, which utilises the energy of running water.
Having being used for centuries, the technology is well established with many schemes across the globe. Small-scale hydropower is suitable for small streams and rivers, usually producing less than 10MW, with micro-hydro commonly used for schemes with capacities below 100kW.
More effective with larger volumes of fast water falling from a height, potential energy of the water is converted into kinetic energy via a turbine, which in turn drives a generator to produce electricity. A small non-intrusive dam can be constructed in order to drop the water if a large drop is not present on the stream.
Advantages of the technology include:
Although upfront costs of installation can be high, hydroelectricity can be the most cost effective renewable energy option because the plant life is substantially longer than other small scale technologies
No fuel cost
Maintenance required to the system when up and running is low
Eligible for Feed-in Tariffs, allowing an income to be generated from the energy produced
Also qualify for Renewables Obligation Certificates which can then be sold on the open market
Local government may assist with costs related to work such as feasibility studies, water course improvement, fish passes and biodiversity.
Hydropower offers the opportunity to create a clean renewable source of energy to power your home, reducing your carbon footprint and having minimal impact on the environment
