A simple design, this solar power technology concentrates the light from the sun to create heat using panels. This heat can be used to run a generator to make electricity, or more commonly to heat water via a heat exchanger, which is stored within a water storage tank where the water is heated.
Usually placed on the roof of houses, the panels require little maintenance once installed and you will find most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating.
Advantages of solar water heating include:
A large proportion of your home’s hot water needs be provided by the sun, resulting in lower energy bills
The Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme is offering one off grants to help with the costs of installation. These can be up to £600.
You may be able to receive payments for the heat you generate from a solar water heating system through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive
Also an eligible measure under the UK government’s Green Deal
CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 500kg per year if replacing an electric heating system
