Low-carbon schemes get £62m boost

The energy regulator has announced plans to allocate £62 million to boost low-carbon network projects.

Ofgem has awarded the money to four schemes aimed at speeding up the development of smart grids – which better monitor and control energy usage.

The money comes from a £500 million pot earmarked to help companies rise to the challenge of delivering energy in a more efficient manner.

Smart grids utilise digital technology to control, monitor and supply electricity.

They are seen to be central if the Government is to stick to its 2020 targets for reducing carbon emissions.

Commenting on Ofgem’s announcement, Energy Minister Charles Hendry said: “We need intelligent and flexible infrastructure in place to deliver reliable, cheap and clean electricity to our homes, factories and businesses.

“A smart grid will form the backbone of this new system by enabling supply and demand to be managed more effectively, greatly enhancing our security of supply.”
